SEO Terms You Should Know

.htaccess

.htaccess is a configuration file that is used to give redirection and protect the files in a website with passwords.

200 status code

It is a status code explaining that the page or image is successfully found and loaded.

301 redirect

301 redirect is an HTTP status code indicating the permanent redirection of a url to another one.

302 redirect

302 redirect is a HTTP status code hunting a temporary redirection of a url to another one.

307 Temporary Redirect

It is an HTTP status code indicating a temporary redirect explaining that the resource url has been temporarily relocated to another one given by the location headers. 302 and 307 redirects are different as 307 is a valid temporary redirect and 302 is little vague one.

404 status code

It is “Not Found” server code explaining that the server couldn’t find the requested page or resource through the url given.

500 Internal Server Error

500 internal server error is an HTTP status code indicating that the server got a invalid response while processing the request

502 Bad Gateway

502 Bad Gateway is shown when the server has encountered an issue that it doesn’t know how to handle.

A/B testing

A/B testing, also known as split testing, is the testing of 2 different versions of the same website or advertisement or any campaign to determine which performs better.

Above The Fold

Above the fold in online media refers to the content that is visible in the website when one enters the website, without scrolling down.

Absolute link

Absolute link is a link that uses the entire URL of a page instead of using a relative link path. It is the most preferred type, as it does not cause any issues with canonicalization and hijacking.

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)

Developed by AMP Open Source Project, Accelerated Mobile Pages is an open source HTML framework developed with the vision to increase the  loading speed of websites and optimise websites for mobile devices.

AdSense

It is a contextual display advertising platform run through Google. It allows the users to set relevant ads on their website. It can be formatted as graphics, text links, videos, animated graphics.

AdWords

Adwords, presently known as Google Ads is the paid advertising platform of Google, developed to reach the target market of a business through partner sites. It uses quality score to analyse the CTR, bounce rate, etc. of the advertisers.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is a marketing program which allows the independent marketers to attract visitors to the site and get payment for the cost per action model. They get more money by attracting more visitors.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs is an SEO tool designed to help SEO professionals rank good in search engines. It contains tools for keyword research,  link building, competitor analysis, site  audit, rank tracking, etc.

Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX)

It is a Web development technique used to request data without opening a new page.

Algorithm

Algorithm is an automated procedure developed to solve problems quickly. It is the algorithm of Google that determines the ranking of websites in search results for particular keywords.

Alt Attribute

Alt attribute is an HTML code used as a text-based alternative for an image or video. It is mainly used by search engines and screen readers and they provide context for an image or video.

Analytics

Analytics helps to analyse the data and statistics of a website. Details like page views, load time, user behaviour, dimensions like demographics and user locations, etc can be accessed by Analytics.

Anchor Text

It is the clickable text in a hyperlink. It is an important element of SEO and relevancy of the text to the content of the link is greatly evaluated by Google. However, the Penguin update of Google restricts the use of exact match anchor text to a page.

Application Program Interface (API)

Application program interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools used for the creation of software applications. Many search products and information based products use API giving simplified integration and use of third party software in custom application.

Article Spinning

It is a cheap SEO technique and a black hat practice where the same article is rewritten by changing sentence’s word order and using synonyms to avoid plagiarism

Article Syndication

Article syndication refers to the republishing of a content on another site, so the site can be reached to new audiences, build backlinks and increase traffic.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence imitates the intellectual process of humans using computer systems. Using natural language processing, expert systems, machine vision, speech recognition, etc. they try to stimulate the human mind’s ability to problem solving and decision making.

Authority

It is a qualitative metric used for ranking and exposure of a website.

Auto-Generated Content

It is a black hat seo practice where the content is automatically generated using a code or program. As content created without direct human intervention, it is used to manipulate search engines.

Average Position

It is the average value of the ranking of all your keywords in your campaign.
